Our Story

John Matthews is a seasoned travel writer specializing in pet-friendly destinations across North America. With over 15 years of experience documenting adventures from Alaska to the Florida Keys, John brings an authentic, conversational style to his travel narratives. His work has appeared in numerous publications, focusing on off-the-beaten-path discoveries and local experiences that welcome four-legged companions.

Bonnie Matthews is a retired financial planner who spent three decades helping clients achieve their financial goals before embarking on a full-time travel lifestyle with John. Her meticulous planning skills now serve their nomadic lifestyle, balancing budget-conscious travel with memorable experiences. Bonnie’s eye for detail complements John’s storytelling abilities, making them the perfect travel team.

Together with their two rescue dogs—Cooper, an 8-year-old whippet/lab cross from Mexico, and Maya, a 6-year-old shepherd mix from Washington State—John and Bonnie spend 8-9 months of the year traversing the roads of the United States and Canada in their 2020 RAM 3500 pulling a comfortable 30′ fifth-wheel trailer. Their travels are punctuated by occasional flights to their favorite tropical destinations: Maui, Hawaii and Cancun, Mexico.

When not exploring new territories, the Matthews call Marysville, Washington home, where they recharge before planning their next adventure. Their travel style typically involves preparing breakfast and dinner in their well-equipped trailer kitchen, while lunching at local eateries to sample regional cuisine—a strategy that’s both cost-effective and allows them to experience authentic local flavors. They are perpetually on a quest for the most delicious, authentic Mexican food, a passion that has led them to hidden gems across the continent.
